So. What happened?

So…. What happend?

It all began a few months ago when the phone company I was with hiked up their pre-pay prices yet again. It was now very expensive to do almost nothing with the phone. Sure, if you’re a heavy user, the prices get better if you purchase bundles. But that’s simply not what I need. Soon began the passive search for a set up better suited to my usage. Around this time another company advertised a set up that would very much suit my needs. Then life got busy and the idea went away for a little while.

Then I got back from my recent trip to NZ and the quest was renewed. My plan was to buy a multi-sim phone so that I could keep my current number alive while I tried different pre-pay sims. I did this, however I ended up coming to a very clear leader just from research. I was curious to see if there were any hidden charges, so I continued with the multi-sim phone idea for a couple of weeks. By the end of that two weeks, it was very very clear this was the right choice. I had spent less than a 10th of my normal amount, and that included my trying to push it in ways it was not suited for.

Over the years, the old number had accumulated a bit of spam. So I decided to start fresh. Therefore the last step was to tell everyone the new number. Life got busy again, and it all went on hold.

Then the moment came, when I had time to do it. Late one evening I start by messaging my NZ contacts something like “Hi all, I’m about to message you from my new number (________).” The plan was that I’d then message them again from my new number. On this phone, it was really easy to message the same group of people, and simply choose which sim to use. However I forgot an important step… Here’s what I did:

Before it had even finished sending to everyone, I was getting messages like “Who r u?” No worries, I just adapted my second message and sent it from my old number “This is Kevin, sorry I sent the first txt from my new number first. Please use that now.”

Moral of the story. Make sure you choose the right sim card when messaging.

Now that I have the NZ contacts sorted, time to do the UK personal contacts.

Darn it! No worries, I’ll send the second message from my old number and explain who I am “Ha! I sent that from my new number first. Nailed it! (Kevin)” Trouble is. This time there was a lot of confusion coming back over the next hour or so as to which number to use. By this time it was getting late at night, so I decided to wait until the morning to clear everything up.

The next morning when I got a spare moment I sent a follow up txt appologising for the confusion and that the new number is definitely the right one to use. Just as I pressed send I thought “I probably should have topped up before sending that” (This is quite a lot of txt messages by now!) The phone gets through a few people before it starts getting failure notifications. Picture this:

I’m walking down the road with people looking at me funny as my phone sounds like a 90s remix of my sheep ringtone.

After a few minutes this passes and my phone settles back down to normal. I top up, and try to resend the failed messages. After a few frustrating minutes battling the google hangouts replacement of the SMS app, I eventually hit send on a particular failed message hoping I could go through the failures and resend them. No such luck. Everyone recieved another round. Some people recieved it for the second time.

So now the result is that hopefully everyone correctly knows what my new number is. For anyone in any doubt, it’s the one with 747 in it :D . I could say that this is the result of an oversimplified user interface. But in this case it’s not. It’s just me tripping over my own feet. It kind of reminds me of that scene from madagasgar; the first 12 seconds of this clip: (Appologies, I couldn’t find a better quality)

Tomorrow, it will be time for my business contacts… Third time lucky?
